The Elizabeth Bishop Society is getting excited about our upcoming Annual General Meeting on 14 June, at 1:30 p.m., in Great Village, Nova Scotia. We do have a little business to tend to, but mostly, we are having a 20th anniversary party. There will be lots of food, including a special cake, and to lift all our spirits and maybe even make us dance, we have the trio Cocada to perform Brazilian music -- and a very special Bishop-inspired work. Everyone is welcome! We hope to see you there.
Joanne
Hatfield, Jef Wirchenko and Dawn Hatfield, who together make COCADA, will
provide some of their wonderful Brazilian music, and a very special performance of
“Lantern,” a work by Joanne inspired by and incorporating Elizabeth Bishop’s
poem “Rain Towards Morning.” This work was commissioned by John Barnstead. Here, in this photo, they are seen in St. James United Church after one of their lively, lovely performances, a couple of years ago.
Cocada celebrates the lush music
of Brazil, performing bossa nova repertoire and original compositions. Joanne
Hatfield writes music, maintains a piano studio, directs a church choir and
co-directs a community African drumming ensemble. Dawn Hatfield is a music
educator, composer and Juno-award winning musician whose versatility allows her
to leap from flute to ukulele to baritone sax. She can be found playing in a
wide-variety of ensembles, including sax quartets, blues, rock and swing bands
and contemporary music orchestras. Bassist, Jef Wirchenko is the anchor of
Maple Blues Award-winning Shirley Jackson’s “Good Rocking Daddies.” He has
contributed his sound to groups ranging in style from rock to roots to
jazz.
